Engineers’
Questionable Decisions

White truck by the water
For the most part I typically give auto engineers the benefit of a doubt, despite what I might utter under my breath when I’m elbow deep into an engine. No, they didn’t design it this way because they hate me; it just sometimes feels that way.

I often wonder if engineers have their feelings hurt a little when people start mix-matching trucks and engines. It’s becoming more and more common that an owner loves the look of his brand X truck, but would rather have a brand Y engine or vice versa. Naturally you have to assume if engineers were doing a better job there would be fewer conversion kits on the market today, or at least a few less “Fummins” trucks on the road.

Truth is, engineers have a tough job. In a lot of ways they’re like offensive linemen in football. The only time you notice those big guys on the field is when they get hurt or when they commit a penalty. When they do their job and the team gets in the end zone, all the attention is usually focused on the running back who scored the touchdown or the quarterback who threw the pass. And yes, back in the day I was one of those salty linemen.

XDP X-TRA Deep Billet Aluminum Pans
XDP X-TRA Deep Billet Aluminum oil and transmission pan
Whether you’re building a truck for the show or the street, the XDP X-TRA Deep Billet Aluminum oil and transmission pan is the answer for your rig. Don’t settle for an OEM pan that holds less fluid and isn’t visually appealing.  The deep sump design provides an additional two quarts of oil capacity.

The XD454 features a machined groove and comes with a new O-ring gasket. For added protection, a magnetic drain plug helps capture any loose particles and prevent them from damaging your engine’s vital internal components. Designed as a direct replacement for the weak factory plastic pan as well as the later-model steel pans. Each pan comes ready to install and is backed by XDP’s one-year, unlimited mileage warranty. They are available for Power Stroke and Cummins applications. (www.xtremediesel.com)

(left) Jeremy Roop’s low slung 2008 Chevrolet 3500 HD is a show-winning monster that he still uses and abuses for everything including hauling a 5th wheel trailer, drag racing and dyno pulling even with the highly polished 26-inch Forgiato Duro wheels! (top) Looking through the rear seems stock, but lifting the seat reveals a custom subwoofer enclosure for a 10-inch Kicker sub that helps blast out the tunes driven by a 250-watt Kicker amplifier. (middle) The factory sunroof and video screen help make the interior even more comfortable on long road trips.(lower) An Edge Products CTS2 display resides on the windshield mount near the driver side A-pillar to help Roop keep an eye on the truck’s vitals when he’s behind the wheel.

In the time of trailer-queen show trucks we regularly see at diesel performance shows and events across the country it is great to come across one that looks like a show truck, works like a farm truck and flies like a race truck. We found that elusive combination within Jeremy Roop’s low slung 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD two-wheel-drive dually.

Roop purchased the truck new in 2008 and has been customizing it in various ways throughout the years in an evolution that does not seem to show an end any time soon. Like most gearheads he says he is still working on his build and never expects it to be done. In the meantime, we will showcase his Silverado in its show winning 600hp trim.

Man's Best Friend: Long days on the road with an F250

They say a dog is a man’s best friend. I say it’s a truck.

Much like a dog, a truck is loyal and takes care of you as long as you take care of it. It’s also a great companion on road trips, something Ryan Schliesmann is quite familiar with.

Ryan runs a courier and freight business, taking deliveries all over his home state of Florida and even sometimes up into Georgia or the Carolinas.

“It could be from 5 a.m. to 5 in the afternoon, depending on how my day is going,” an upbeat Ryan explained after driving 800 miles that day.

A 90s model gas Chevy with a Range Rover kit for the grille and a custom paint job sits in a Florida shop. It’s the first truck that young Joseph Pitts ever had a say in and it hooked him to the lifestyle. His father was forced to sell it due to a lack of airbags, but he promised Joseph he’d buy him another one.

Fast forward a few years and Joseph (Instagram: @josephpitts00) has accomplished a lot for a 21-year-old. He’s the president of a vehicle club in Tennessee (@next_level_creations_), he works for a water utility company fixing main waterline breaks and he’s built up his 2015 GMC Denali 2500HD in a nice way.

Something To Show Off
Joseph got his GMC about two years ago. It’s his first personal diesel build and he doesn’t think he’ll ever go back to a gasser. As for his idea behind the build, it was simple: be different.

Alex Powers and her truck

It wouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that many of the diesel pickup owners featured in our magazine said “truck,” “diesel” or maybe even “lift kit” as their first words as kids. The love of trucks is more often than not instilled in us as young children as our grandparents, parents or siblings showed us the ropes of late nights in the garage, fixing up a truck. It can be refreshing to come across someone’s diesel journey that’s just a little different. Alex Powers is different.
Getting In The Game
Alex comes from a family of nurses and doctors. She originally went to college in hopes of becoming a veterinarian — not exactly a nurse or doctor, but somewhat related. While attending State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, a public college in Cobleskill, N.Y., Alex started hanging out with mechanically inclined friends who spent their free time working on pickup trucks. She learned the ins and outs of a diesel and found she really enjoyed it, enough in fact to start studying diesel technology in school.

Cold Air Intakes
The power of a good intake
Just like you need a high-functioning AC unit to make it through hot summer days, so does your pickup. A cold air intake brings in cold air, which produces a higher amount of oxygen density compared to warm air, and turns it into greater performance. Maximize your diesel engine’s efficiency with one of these cold air intakes.
aFe POWER
The Quantum Cold Air Intake system for the 2013-2018 RAM 2500/3500 takes aFe POWER’s decades of performance experience and combines it with industrial-grade strength and durability.

The Quantum intake offers in-house dyno proven max gains of 15hp and 37 lb-ft of torque from a system that can be installed in less than an hour and is easy to service. aFe’s patent-pending filter-to-housing interface design fits perfectly in your engine bay and retains RAM Active Air functionality. A silicone bellows coupler links the large 360-degree radial-flow, re-usable air filter and the dyno-tuned intake tube to add flexibility, and dampens excess engine movement from the powerful 6.7L Cummins to retain a perfect fit and finish.

With the aFe POWER Quantum Cold Air Intake, you get a quality engineered intake that looks the part and is always ready to work as hard as your RAM truck. (844-876-9929 // www.afepower.com)

Julian Pantoja: Homer Glen, IL: 2010 Ram Laramie

Julian Pantoja from Illinois likes to say, “You just gotta keep livin’ man.” Well Julian does a lot of his living through his 2010 RAM Laramie. He uses it as both his daily driver and show truck, with mods such as his starlight headliner, powder-coated springs, rock light/wheel lights, a custom 8-inch tip, a custom interior and 24x14s KG1 forged wheels with Nitto 420 tires highlighting his build. He also has it fully color-matched.

In the near future he’d like to add a 6-inch lift from Air Lift as well as a full sound system. Keep on livin’, Julian.
