What Off-Season?

Crowd of people
“Things must be pretty slow for you in the office these days, huh? Just staring at the walls–am I right, my friend? Heh, heh.”

I am at a party.

I know no one at this party and have been dragged here by my wife.

The only thing I’m worse at than small talk is small talk with strangers. But here I am, trying to earn good husband points, talking with someone whose name has already escaped me even though it’s only been 30 seconds since I heard it. I am trying to concentrate on what he is saying while my eyes desperately scan the room for my wife or, if she truly loved me, my wife with her coat on.

Alas, no such luck, so I am locked in with hearty-laugh guy, trying to explain that, while it’s certainly not prime truck season, as the executive editor of Diesel Tech magazine there is plenty going on to keep us busy as a magazine this time of year.

Your Differential Will Thank You
PPE upgraded differential cover
Specially engineered to minimize friction and maximize lubrication, an upgraded cover from PPE will keep your GM rear differential running cool and clean. It is made from high-quality cast A356.0-T6 aluminum for strength and optimum heat dissipation and the increased fluid capacity provides greater thermal stamina. This keeps your differential oil running cooler. The oil will keep its viscosity, which helps extend differential service life. To help keep your differential oil cleaner, this cover comes with PPE Billet Stainless Steel Drain/Fill Plugs. Each plug features high-power Neodymium magnets, which pull harmful ferrous particles out of your fluids before they have a chance to do damage. Simply wipe grit away at each service. Applies to the 2020 – 2021+ GM 1500 Series Diesel I-6. (www.ppepower.com)

'58 blue and white farm truck
For as far back as Holden Jung can remember, the 1958 Ford F100 pickup has always been in his family as it spent many of those years in his grandparents’ field. It just sat abandoned. In fact, as a kid Holden recalls shooting out the windows with his BB gun as the truck’s best days appeared to be in its rearview mirror. Turns out the ol’ vintage Ford wasn’t past its prime after all; the young boy who once shot at the truck would grow up and one day bring it back to life.

Holden started working in a hot rod shop, which he credits for starting his passion for older trucks. He began seeing the old family truck from a different perspective and realized the ’58 Ford was very rare with a short bed and a big back window and he now wanted it for his own.

“I went and asked my grandparents if I could buy it from them and they said if I would just get it out of the field I could have it,” recalls Holden. “I think they were just relieved to have it finally gone.”

The Papi’s Garage SEMA builds subtitle
By Seth Harper
Typically, we feature driveway builds and garage projects — the type of trucks our readers can relate to and maybe even learn something from. After seeing these two pickups crab walking down Las Vegas Boulevard, we had to make an exception.
Making A Scene
An amateur clearly didn’t throw these trucks together using YouTube as their guide. It took the work of a team of professionals using their diverse knowledge of mechanics, engineering, welding, coding and app development to make it happen. And the hard work paid off at the 2021 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show.

Jay Leno, Keith Urban and the coolest diesel pickup builds you can find. SEMA is the pinnacle of the automotive aftermarket industry and that’s where we found Manny Ramirez and his Papi’s Garage team. They were plenty busy that week showing off the trucks, running their social media pages and making connections. On their Instagram page (@papisgarage) you can find a video of the two trucks on the Las Vegas Strip as they literally drove sideways. By the second day, SEMA had surpassed their expectations.

Ford’s brand is “Built Ford Tough,” which kind of says it all. Chevy went with “Find New Roads,” speaking to the explorer in all of us. GMC’s “Like A Pro” makes you want to be a pro, which, according to them, is accomplished through the ownership of one of their GMC vehicles. Even if the brand slogans exist as sales techniques, they each have something in common in that they stand for something. Whether you like it or not, you’re not just buying a diesel engine when you head down to your local truck lot for a new toy — you’re buying a message.

Matt Harmening also sells a message with his brand, Diesel Legiance (Instagram: @diesellegiance), whose slogan “Respect The Build” doesn’t really do the brand justice for all it stands for and tries to accomplish.

“When you think of a diesel truck, you think of a powerful, hard-working truck,” Harmening said.

Lexi Buckler
Duramax Queen

What’s the worst thing that can happen to you while racing? Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen would probably say losing, but most of us can’t imagine anything scarier than our brakes going out at top speed.

Lexi Buckler would probably agree since that’s exactly what happened to her. Her brakes went out and the car flipped, leaving her understandably a little nervous to get back on the race track. But she did. At just 8 years old.

An Obsession

Buckler had many differing interests growing up. She would work out in the garage with her step dad, the owner of a mechanic shop, then leave to attend cheer practice. She started Junior Dragster at age 8 and when she was just 14, her diesel obsession started.
