The Roaming Eye
My wife grabbed my cell phone the other night and started scrolling through my photos. Now, that can be an uncomfortable situation if you don’t see it coming. I hadn’t changed my pass code in years so I blame myself, but I didn’t think I had anything to hide so I wasn’t overly concerned. We had just returned from a 10-day family vacation and she was curious to see what pictures I had taken on our trip. In my defense, I did take plenty of pictures of the kiddos and what not, but I squirmed in my chair a little when she paused for a moment and then questioned something she had just found.

“What is this?!” she asked in a confused tone. My mind instantly began to race as I tried to figure out what she could possibly be referring to. A hot girl by the pool? Nope, already deleted those pics. A video of me launching the kids “safely” onto the hotel bed from across the room? No, it couldn’t be that since we always hide the evidence from mom. I was out of ideas and I had no clue what she had found that had her so confused. All I knew was I was busted for taking a photo of something she didn’t agree with.

The Future Of Truck Shows

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended lives left and right around the globe for about a full year now, and we’re still trying to figure a lot of things out. Events across the board have been canceled and shut down as gathering restrictions to slow the spread of the deadly virus have taken hold, and truck shows sadly have been no exception to this rule. Some of the biggest disappointments in our industry last year were the cancellation of the Ultimate Callout Challenge (UCC) in greater Indianapolis, Ind., along with the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nev. Depending on where you live though (as not all areas have had the same gathering restrictions due to varying population density), some smaller and even medium-size show n’ shines and local truck meets still took place this past summer.

Making Progress

As we’ve said goodbye to 2020 and flipped the calendar over to 2021 however, we’ve made a lot of progress in our education and accomplishments and have seen some signs of hope arise and give us hints that regaining more control of our lives may just be on the horizon as we learn more about the virus and as vaccines and therapeutics are being distributed and administered. Depending on who you ask, life may not end up being quite the same as we once knew it, but I do know this is a battle we will win and this difficult time will pass.

One and Done Sway Bar End Links
Close view of BD Diesel Performance's sway bar
Because of the heavy demands on the RAM 4×4 pickups, the sway bar end links on the 2010-2012 2500 and 3500 are known to wear, pound out, and even break when the truck is lifted on two-post lifts as a result of stress from the axle dropping. This pesky maintenance item can now be replaced once and for all!

BD Diesel Performance’s sway bar end links for these trucks have a dual-pivot design that allows for greater articulation and less stress.

The long-life urethane bushing design allows the links to flex more without breaking and will not pound out or seize as a result of weather conditions, which even the competition would be envious of. All components are made to be easily serviceable, and wearing items aren’t expensive to replace. The kits come complete with all hardware and can be installed in about an hour. Under the Hood of a truck
Tires on a truck
Lights on a truck
Take a look at this big, high-end southern New England beast! It’s a 2017 dually GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD with the L5P Duramax engine and it has undergone a ton of work! Owned by John McKim of East Lyme, Conn., this truck will blow away anyone who gets to see it and it has become a dream come true for the owner.
Truck Life
“I always loved a nice thick dually,” says John. “This build was actually an idea that started seven years ago when I was in college at the University of Northwestern Ohio. I liked that I could still use a dually for travel, work or anything I wanted to and I was sold.”

John had owned two different 24-valve Cummins over a three-year period and then switched over to Duramax about three to four years ago with a 2005 LLY, and that’s when he fell in love with the Duramax platform.

The F350 Soup Build
Lift kit, wheel and tire install on our 6.7L Power Stroke
Diesel Tech is kicking off a new project build on our 2020 6.7L Power Stroke Ford F350 crew cab; we’re calling it the F350 Soup Build (look it up on Instagram, @f350soup). To get it started, we’ve covered three of the most important upgrades made on it so far to give the panda-like beast a bigger and more aggressive stance with slightly better off-roading ability: a ReadyLIFT 2.5-inch coil spring front lift kit with Bilstein shocks, Fuel Vector 18.9 matte black wheels, and Toyo Open Country R/T 37×13.50R18 tires.

The quality ReadyLIFT kit integrates more than a simple lift or front leveling. It was created to meet the demand for a kit that leveled out the front end without sacrificing ride quality. Since the kit uses replacement coil springs as opposed to a spacer puck, the truck’s ride isn’t affected in any negative way. The installation of the lift kit was completed at PowerTech Diesel in Idaho Falls, Idaho, by technician Travis Prouse along with some help from techs Tyler Olsen and Jordan Johnson. The wheels and tires were sent off to another shop to be mounted and balanced before being installed on the truck.

BEDLINER INSTALL ON OUR 6.7L POWER STROKE
Our F350 Soup build is really getting a nice makeover now, not just on the outside, but also a little on the inside. Not only is it now well-outfitted for the rugged terrain, but the truck also has a cozy and well-protected bed, thanks to this new bedliner that was installed by the Idaho-based PowerTech Diesel. Specifically, this comfy bedliner that covers the entirety of the bed surface is the Husky Liners UltraFiber. The liner features a 3/4-inch cushioned floor to protect both the bed and cargo from scratches, scuffs, or other damage that comes from cargo shifting around in transit, plus it’s easy on the knees when you have to crawl around. The surface is also very easy to clean and can be installed and removed without damaging a truck, unlike spray-on or drop-in liners that can compromise resale value. Technician Travis Prouse installed this exceptional line on our project truck, and it provided a nice setup that couldn’t have turned out any better.
Nick Ledwell's SEMA L5P title
BY COLIN PETERSON
So much has been done to this Duramax that it was featured at the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nev. Not bad for a truck owned by someone from the greater Boston, Mass., area. While we don’t see too many lifted and heavily built diesels from large and densely-populated metros, there are plenty of them out there.

This L5P Duramax build, owned by Nick Ledwell of Norton, Mass., is unique based on the sophistication and quality of the large undercarriage and the ton of add-ons. Nick works as a commercial electrician, but outside of work, his life revolves around diesels and his multiple trucks.

Built, Not Bought
Nick’s 2018 Silverado 2500HD LTZ was purchased brand-new in the vehicle’s corresponding year, and Nick had it built right away upon driving the rig off the lot. His truck wasn’t solely built for SEMA, though. Nowadays, it gets used quite regularly as a daily driver.
Story and Photos by Kyle Tobin
Above & Beyond: This F250 Work Truck is Packed with Unique Customizations text
This rugged F250 stands out in Florida’s panhandle against Porter Lake’s serene landscape.

Most truck projects are never finished. And when your project is a diesel truck, you’ve got plenty of life in it to tinker with for a long time. Rod Benesh of Benesh Electric based in Southern California has had his 2002 Ford F250 since it was just a couple years old and has spent nearly a decade and a half upgrading and perfecting his truck. His attention to detail and regimen of maintenance has kept the aging rig in pristine condition despite its transformation into his daily driving work truck.

Benesh volunteered his time, expertise, and his well-equipped truck to assist in relief efforts in the Florida Panhandle, yet even amid the chaos and carnage fresh after Hurricane Michael’s devastation in 2018, the mighty work truck stayed neat and clean as it brought aid to many in need.

Ellie & Brizee: A Tale Of Two Duramaxes title text
BY COLIN PETERSON
Now here’s a story we definitely don’t come across on a regular basis. It consists of a lady who owns and operates not one, but TWO Duramax diesel trucks, and both of them are GMCs. Holly Neal, the owner of these rigs, lives in Franklin, Tenn., a southern suburb of Nashville, and she’s a die-hard diesel lover with plenty of experience around diesel pickups.

“My husband got me into diesels in 2013; he taught me how to drive a manual and I bought a 2000 white regular cab Ford F250 7.3L Power Stroke six-speed from him; from then on I’ve been hooked,” she says. “But I sold that truck back to him because of knee issues and my family is really into GM trucks.”

Her black truck today is a 2005 2500HD LLY named Ellie with roughly 297,000 miles, purchased in May 2020, while her white one is a 2006 2500HD LBZ named Brizee with about 258,000 miles, acquired in September 2020.

Diesel Additives
Products to keep your engine running strong
Fuel additives are helpful and often important to have in engines year-round in order to help them run stronger (and sometimes help your fuel burn cleaner). Over time, a fuel system will gum up, and an engine will build up carbon deposits (sludge) as it gets used more and more. This could possibly also plug the diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust on mid-2007 and newer diesels. All in all, it’ll have detrimental effects on engine performance.

Diesel fuel also can gel up during the winter, clogging fuel lines and filters and preventing an engine from starting. Thus, additives are especially important to have for diesel engines and it’s important to find one that’ll clean your engine parts as well as your fuel system for optimum performance. Here, we’ve rounded up some of the best additive products for Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins engines to help you get started.

AMSOIL
AMSOIL Diesel Injector Clean + Cetane Boost
AMSOIL Diesel Injector Clean + Cetane Boost was launched in the spring of 2019 and earned a Global Media Award at the Performance Industry Racing (PRI) Show in Indianapolis, Ind., later that year. It combines superior lubricity and detergency along with increased horsepower and cetane in one convenient product.

The AMSOIL award-winning product cleans dirty injectors, increases cetane up to 8 points, lubricates pumps and injectors to reduce wear and is safe for use in all diesel fuels. The result is restored horsepower and improved fuel economy in diesel applications.

Ben Kirkland's 1990 12-valve 5.9L Dodge truck
We definitely don’t see too many of these old beasts on the road anymore, and this one sure looks great for its age (now 30 years old)! This is the second model year to feature the Cummins turbo diesel in the Dodge/RAM trucks. Ben Kirkland, who owns this 1990 12-valve 5.9L, lives in the greater Sacramento, Calif., area and has it quite well built up.

“I bought this truck when I was 17 years old, and I plan on completely rebuilding it,” says Ben. “This truck is my daily driver back and forth from work, though I also take it to truck meets and have other sorts of fun with it.”
