Flashy Versus Sleeper
Granted, if money wasn’t a true factor, I would dare wager that most of us would prefer a truck that not only performed well, but also looked the part too. Sure, there are plenty of sleeper truck owners who genuinely love showing up at a track in a stock-looking pickup and stunning the crowd. Or those weekend warriors who love to see the look on the hot shot Mustang driver (in their rearview mirror, that is) who had no idea what was under the hood of the otherwise grocery-getter pickup until he opened his big mouth. But in the real world where paychecks do count, life—especially when it comes to modifying your diesel truck—is all about compromise and one upgrade at a time for a lot of us.

So in this great debate, which is more important to you? This thought crossed my mind when I was traveling last summer. I stopped for a quick bite to eat and as I was heading into the restaurant I noticed a lifted RAM truck; blame it on my day job. It had a great-looking customized grille, oversized tires on 24-inch wheels and some other exterior upgrades. She was a real beauty and after a quick peek I instantly ditched my plan to eat. I just had to know more about this truck.

What A Stud
Box of TrackTech studs
TrackTech releases the strongest head studs in their class for Power Stroke, Duramax, and Cummins pickup trucks. These studs are tested and validated at 240,000psi using state-of-the-art UTM tensile testing machines, making them one of the strongest on the market for their purpose and price range.

In addition to lab testing, these head studs are tested on the track under the harshest conditions. They stand up to the most demanding situations even when other brands fail. TrackTech offers a range of head studs and fasteners as well as complete gasket kits. (www.tracktechfasteners.com)

So there’s this trend right now. It’s called overlanding…you might have heard about it. What some consider a way of life to explore the great outdoors, others think is an overpriced camping trip on wheels.

From budget to over-the-top, there are a lot of ways to get into overlanding. One of the common objectives with overlanding is to be self-sufficient, haul everything you need and the kitchen sink—gear, extra fuel, food sleeping quarters and supplies—to get off the grid for an extended period of time. On one end of the spectrum you can load up a clapped out s#!tbox with camping gear and some food, water and fuel for an adventure. On the other end of the spectrum you can spend a $1M plus on an F550 EarthRoamer with every creature comfort, amenity and offroad capability. There’s no one right way to do it. It all depends on your budget and needs, but it should be said it’s accessible to everyone to get out and do it. We’ve had this thought that a service truck would make a great platform to start from; it’s built tough, has tons of storage, they are readily available and it’s fairly cheap to pick one up used. Well the fellas over at BDS had a similar thought, to build an overlander based around a service truck, except for them that trick was a new 2020 Ford F350 CCLB diesel and, well, from the looks of it this wasn’t exactly a cheap build.

Not all diesel truck builds come about because someone has a lot of time and money to pour into a dream project truck. Often, it’s a working man trying to build a daily driver working man’s truck—something with power to pull, practicality to perform and just enough product features to impress.

For Cody Clifford of Victorville, Calif., building an impressive show truck has always been a pipe dream. His main focus in life is taking care of his small family and providing for them the best he can. Anything else would be second in priority.

But Cody has always had a love for diesel trucks.

Making it his way: Andrew's Backyard Build title

The owner of this high-output common rail Cummins truck may call it a backyard build, but it’s way more than that. This blue one-ton truck has a ton of upgrades on it, so many might think the truck has already made its way into the big leagues. Andrew Daddario, who serves diligently in the U.S. Air Force, originally is from central Pennsylvania but now lives in West Haven, Utah, a northern suburb of Salt Lake City.

“I enlisted in the Air Force right out of high school in 2015, and the West Haven area is my duty station,” he says. Andrew has owned this 5.9L 2004 Dodge RAM 3500 for just about two years now. It’s a well-traveled machine, given that it has more than 300,000 miles on it. However, it’s very impressive and still clearly plenty able to sport a show-quality status and appearance despite its age. To add to the “wow” factor, Andrew did all of the work on the truck himself!

Install of 3.5-inch lift on diesel Jeep Gladiator
Here’s something we typically don’t cover much in our magazine, as our focus is much more on Ford, Chevy/GMC and RAM diesel pickup trucks. However, we figured we’d break away from tradition for a little bit and experiment with a new type of content in our publication by covering the install of a Metalcloak 3.5-inch Game Changer suspension on this new 3.0L EcoDiesel Jeep Gladiator, owned by Alan Nickell of Idaho Falls, Idaho, who owns the Vision Collision repair shop.

The suspension on Alan’s Jeep is Metalcloak’s top-of-the-line kit, featuring patented technology not available anywhere else that truly gives the premium off-road performance he deserves. The innovative kit was installed by technician Jordan Johnson at PowerTech Diesel in Idaho Falls with some help from Alan himself as well as other technicians in the shop.

Yeah, I Drive That, Meet Pricilla, Taylor’s 7.3L queen typography
BY SETH HARPER

When people see Taylor Teets get out of her 1995 Ford F350, they sometimes say, “There is no way you drive that.” Taylor simply responds, “Yeah, I drive that.”

Hailing from Biglerville, Pa., Taylor brings as much passion to diesel trucks as anyone and loves to prove wrong the haters who might dare doubt her. She knows her stuff, thanks to getting into the car scene at a young age. Taylor’s grandpa played a large role in raising her and showed her the ropes through his work as a mechanic.

“I was always with him in the garage, working on cars and trucks,” Taylor explained. “I got into it and then I took more of a liking to trucks than anything so that’s what really got me into diesels.” When Taylor turned 18 she decided it was time to find herself a diesel truck.

Tonneau Covers
Keep Your Bed Covered
When it comes to getting the most out of your truck and the extra storage capacity it offers, a tonneau cover can be one of the best investments you can make. If a storm has ever snuck up on you and soaked your uncovered cargo, or if you have ever “donated” your favorite cooler or some other important item to the side of the road during a long trip, you already understand the benefits. A tonneau cover allows you to secure items in the bed of your truck, as well as keep your cargo safely locked and out of sight of a potential thief. Which cover is right for you? That’s a good question and hopefully our roundup can help you make the best decision for your specific needs and preference.
Agri-Cover’s LOMAX STANCE hard-folding tonneau cover on truck
AGRI-COVER
Agri-Cover’s LOMAX STANCE hard-folding tonneau cover brings increased versatility and functionality to your truck with a behind-the-cab design. This black urethane tonneau cover provides secure storage when closed and enables full bed use when in the vertical position. Made from strong aluminum alloy panels with aluminum channels and durable waterproof seals, these hard covers keep all the elements out of your truck’s box. Powder-coated steel pivot links with rubber bushings and rooftop anchors prevent vibration noise and the cover from resting against your rear window when vertical. The cover is easy to install, and without the need for removal, this hard folding cover makes loading and unloading your bed simple and convenient.

CURT
Puck System Gooseneck Kit
Here we have one of the best gooseneck hitch kits on the market that truly does what it says. We used this kit to outfit our F350 Soup Project for heavy towing, and it sure makes our life easier as we haul a giant trailer full of sleds and side-by-sides. At first it was difficult to tell from the product description just how well this kit would work for our F350 Power Stroke, but it offered plenty to meet our expectations. When we got our hands on it, the safety hooks went in fairly snug. However, that’s probably a good thing, as you don’t want those breaking loose en route! Otherwise, the kit’s components easily dropped into the pucks on our bed, and our F350 was ready to haul!
