A Diesel Camaro? Hoonigan's Complete 6.6L LBZ Duramax 200 MPH Car
When it comes to outrageously ridiculous but completely necessary chaotic automotive ingenuity, there’s no one better than Hoonigan in Compton, Calif. And apparently, they didn’t think building their “Hoonicorn” was enough—a 1,400hp twin turbo supercharged Mustang that completely dusted the actual twin turbo McLaren Senna hypercar from Forza Horizon 4’s cover in the quarter-mile while intentionally giving the McLaren a complete triple-car-length lead on the start, but that also beat Ken Block’s 4,000hp NHRA Corvette C6 in a 1,000-foot drag. But no, they didn’t decide to stop the craziness there. So what was their next good idea?

They decided to put a 6.6L LBZ Duramax engine into a fifth-gen 2011 Camaro with the intention of building a 1,000hp diesel muscle car capable of going 200mph in a standing mile.

Hoonigan’s Knuckle Busters team ultimately decided to go with a 2011 Camaro because it was the best car with a large enough engine bay size to actually fit the 6.6L diesel engine. Some highlights of the build include the fact that the motor is running a set of unique Edelbrock diesel heads, compounded with twin turbochargers from Precision Turbo & Engine, and it’s pushing 80 psi of boost. When the team initially tested the motor, a boost leak meant only 60 psi was flowing. Now, of course a 900+ pound Duramax V8 isn’t the most logical choice for a performance machine, but regardless, it churned out 985 horsepower and 1,500 lbs./ft. of torque on the dyno… without full boost! And to give a point of reference, typically only 600-650hp is necessary to break the 200 mph barrier, meaning Hoonigan once again went completely beyond what was necessary to reach their goal.

Overkill, right?
To give some real-world perspective, when the engine was first fired up and inspected by the PPE team in PPE’s garage before taking it to the dyno, it was so powerful that it was shaking the workshop’s concrete foundation floor at idle speed! If there was ever an informal way to measure impressive power, that would be it. And it’s also worth mentioning that after fixing the boost leak, the Camaro put out so much torque that it was recorded performing a rolling burnout for practically the entire length of the Santa Margarita Ranch Airport’s airstrip—that’s A LOT of torque!

Other build highlights include Anderson Composites carbon fiber body panels, a built gearbox from Monster, and a set of custom KW coilovers. The independent rear suspension was ditched for a COPO-style Winters quick-change rear end as well, which is better for drag racing with this much power.

If you would like to see more, the entire build was video-documented and can be watched on the Hoonigan YouTube channel as well as on their website.
